What You Need to Know About Retaining Your FEHB Coverage

You will need to apply for your own coverage within 60 days after your coverage under your former spouse’s plan lapses. By doing so, you will be guaranteed coverage without proof of insurability. You will also be required to pay both the employer and the employee portions of the premium. In order to be approved for coverage, you will need to meet specific criteria, including the following:

• You were divorced from a federal employee while he or she was employed with the government
• You were covered as the employee’s family member under the FEHB Program during the last 18 months
• You are eligible to receive a portion of the employee’s annuity
• You did not remarry prior to age 55
